"Maths made easy through interactive DVD's"

BANGALORE: In its effort to make learning of high-school Mathematics easy, www.freeganita.com has come up with a 40-hr DVD of video recorded lessons in Kannada for standards 8th, 9th and 10th as per the syllabus of Karnataka State Board.

The DVD set consists of three DVDs, one each for these classes. K V Rajashekhara Somayaji, the founder of www.freeganita.com, told Express that the initiative is aimed for the benefit of rural students, who lack access to Internet.
Somayaji informed that maximum per cent of failures in SSLC is in Mathematics and Karnataka has in excess of 10,000 high schools. It may be recalled here that freeganita.com is a free mathematics web portal set up for high school students. The English website was launched in 2006 while Kannada website in 2007.

Explaining the salient features of the DVD, Somayaji said that the video is recorded as if teacher is teaching in a regular class. “Classroom teaching by three experienced regular teachers of Kota Viveka High School near Udupi is recorded. Simultaneous use of English words when a new term in Kannada is used, to help students switch over to English as a medium at a later stage are some of the features,’’ he added.

Somayaji said that the examples have been drawn from the book `Lilavati’, a famous book on Mathematics by 12th century mathematician Bhaskara, and also introduction of concept of verification is covered in the DVD.

It is believed that the DVD launched in August 2009 will help students from non-urban areas of Karnataka. “Because of sponsorship from Karnataka Bank, we are able to price the DVD set at an affordable price of just Rs 90. We have also approached the Department of State Education Research and Training to make the DVD available for all the high school students,” Somayaji added.
